Should you wear a weightlifting belt? (When, Why, and How to Use One)

Weightlifting belts can be a great training tool to teach you proper breathing mechanics when lifting. A weightlifting belt can serve as a tactile cue to remind you to engage your core and diaphragm properly during lifts.

As you brace against the belt, you'll naturally focus on breathing into your abdomen, which helps stabilize your spine and maintain proper posture throughout the lift.

With that said, should you wear a weightlifting belt when lifting weights?

Well, it depends.

You probably don't need a belt unless you lift weights close to your 1RM. However, if using a belt can help you with your breathing technique, then try using a belt for your heavier sets.

Over time, practicing this coordinated breathing pattern with a weightlifting belt can reinforce good habits that carry over into your lifting sessions even when you're not wearing the belt.

While a belt can be a helpful tool, it shouldn't rely on one as a substitute for proper technique and strength development.
